There is no certified formula or technique to get it perfect each and every time, but the list I’ve made for you about the do’s and don’ts of social media marketing hold up pretty well. So, ladies and gents, if you want to know all about how to master the art of social media marketing, keep reading!
The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media Marketing:
DO know how to listen
Because who doesn’t love a friend that knows how to listen? When it comes to the do’s and don’ts of social media marketing, knowing how to listen is definitely on the to-do list. Interacting with your followers, learning about what they’re interested in and engaging in important online discussions allow you to find out what it is they want and how you can give it to them in a way that also gives you and your brand mileage.
DON’T lose focus
Being good at a lot of things is fine, but being great at one thing is better. Sure, it’s fantastic if you’re good at editing videos and things of that sort, but it takes someone with an eye for detail and a need for success to truly devote himself to one thing at a time. Teaching yourself how to focus on the task at hand is an indispensable tool in the social media marketing sphere. Why? Easy. When you focus on one thing, you allow yourself to master every single aspect of it while making sure you aren’t spreading yourself too thin. For example, being familiar with how to use Photoshop or being good at editing videos is awesome, but if you become an expert in one of those fields, that weighs more than having two so-so skills, for a lack of better words.
DO be patient
Take it easy, buddy. Success doesn’t happen overnight. Nothing mind-blowingly amazing unfolds in a snap of a finger, so be patient when it comes to growing your brand, image, and whatever else you’re marketing on social media. Stick to your timelines and the various benchmarks or goals you have set. Having the patience to do something as detail-oriented and time-consuming as social media marketing takes a lot of hard work! Make sure you’re ready to put in all the effort.
DON’T choose quantity over quality
You already know number 4, right? Never, and I mean NEVER, sacrifice quality for quantity. I can’t stress this enough. When it comes down to it, one golden hen that lays a golden egg a day is better than 5 hens that lay substandard eggs. Okay, maybe my analogy skills need some work, but you get what I mean, yeah? Quality will always win! Make sure what you’re churning out to the public is worth their time. Yeah sure, you’re building up a pretty nice database with all the content you’re publishing – but are any of them good? If your readers see that your content’s shit, you’ve lost them. And it’s harder to win over someone who’s made up their mind about you.
DO build connections
Connections are the name of the game. The do’s and don’ts of social media marketing entails that you have incredible connections. This one’s a no-brainer. The connections you build will open so many doors for you – opportunities you could only dream of! Build an online audience of quality followers, and build connections with the best of the best – fellow influencers, big companies, you name it. Do good and be good to them. All that good energy is going to find its way back to you.
DON’T be inconsistent
Don’t just post something then disappear! People who post one thing and then disappear from the face of the earth are the worst. How are you going to be viewed as a source for reliable, consistent, and quality online content when you can’t even keep a good schedule? Keep your audiences hooked and maintain a large fan base by consistently publishing good content on time. It would be helpful if you create an editorial calendar to help map it all out.
DO become readily available
Audiences love a brand or an influencer who’s always ready to take a call or resolve some concerns. Being readily available 24/7 is nearly impossible, but being approachable and putting in the initiative in getting back to messages as soon as possible is much more realistic. Keep your lines open, and as much as possible, try not to ignore concerns or reply too late. Maintaining an outstanding customer service rep will get you very, very far. Trust me on this.
DON’T forget to reciprocate
If you give a little love, it all comes back to you. A like for a like, a share for a share! You can’t just expect others to follow and like everything you have to offer if you don’t do the same for them. It’s important to a lot a portion of your time to liking and commenting on what they have to show for too. Not only does this strengthen the relationship between you both, but it’s guaranteed to get you a loyal follower that will continue to support you – so long as you support them.
DO value your following
Anything you take for granted will eventually leave you, and then you’re left with nothing. Don’t make the mistake of letting good followers slip away. Show them how much they mean to you. Show them you appreciate them by never failing to thank them, engage with them, and to tend to their concerns. Foster a loyal following by appreciating them, and they’ll stick around to support and appreciate you back. Acknowledge them from time to time. Heck, don’t just stop at your followers, go ahead and give a shout out to the influencers that have done you good by helping your market yourself, or the big brands who have sponsored you in the past. Share the positivity. You’ll be surprised at just how fast the good you give to the world finds you.
DON’T give up your authenticity
The last thing you want is to come out of everyone else’s mold. Don’t give up your authenticity for anyone or anything. Celebrating your unique individuality is priceless in this industry. People follow you because they think you’re different and have something new to offer them. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be true to yourself and to give your followers the treat of seeing someone who is unapologetically himself.
